Aviation Spirit

Posted byLaura DeMeulemeester
AirVenture comes alive 24x7 for one week as an international community of 100,000 people descend upon Oshkosh, WI.  Friendships are renewed, family bonds strengthened, aviation passions explored.

As a first time, non-aviator visitor, I was quite impressed.  The best part is the lack of security lines, baggage claims and overall bustle.  It's cool to see exhibit architecture and consumer engagement at this level.  The people make this an incredible experience.  The spirit, the passion, the overall energy for the community and what they offer.  Educational seminars and technological opportunities abound, as do purchase decisions ... a couple cool executive jets that seem mighty fine!

For a flavor of what you've missed, check out the video.  And mark your calendar - it's only 51 weeks until the next one!

Recycled Jewelry ... for a Cause or just to be Chic

Posted byLaura DeMeulemeester
Recycled jewelry comes in all types, shapes and forms these days - from bobby pins and camera parts to pop cans and paper products.  Here are a couple cool examples:

The Mombula Workshop in Mombasa, Kenya houses "a group of disabled artisans who create funky jewelry out of recycled soda pop cans and wire.  They use pop can cut outs for the bodies of the little people they make. The workshop’s motto is “Disability is not Inability”. They are able to provide for themselves and their families and receive adequate housing and education."

On the other end, Holly Anne Mitchell "changes losing lottery tickets into a revenue generating enterprise. The American artist designs and constructs her line of Jewelry out of recycled paper products. Mitchell uses expired coupons, comic strips, stock lists, crossword and Sudoku puzzles, losing lottery tickets and even used sweetener packets" in her Jewelry line.

Very cool way for Land Rover to get attention.

The Worth of Good Design(ers)

Posted byDarren Coon

Markets continue to fragment. Information clutter is exploding across traditional, new and niche media channels.  In fact, at no time in history has a clear brand identity and a compelling message been more critical. But let's face it.  Strategic analysis of audiences, structuring concise value propositions, and developing genuinely creative communications can be a real headache.

Thank goodness the Internet offers a quick, topical solution to our clients' challenges.  It's Not Rocket Science! Anyone Can Do It!

Since I'll have more time on my hands, I'm off to the beach...

Pop-up meets Prefab

Posted byLaura DeMeulemeester
We've seen green prefab.  We've seen shipping container prefab.  Now we have pop-up prefab.  In a mere 90 seconds, this house opens and is ready to go.

"Cool Hunter notes, with the push of a button, the house opens in 90 seconds like a flower and transforms from a compact container into a fully furnished and functional space with a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, living room and library. All materials used in the Biennale house were recyclable or recycled."

Underwater Art? Hold Your Breath

Posted byAngela Heiple
The video is a little dizzying, but it's one of many that shows off this swimming pool art installation from The 21st Century Museum of Art in Kanazawa City (Japan).  This original piece by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich made such an impression, there are now replicas all over the world.

As you can see from the video and the picture, the people underneath the "swimming pool" can actually look above at other people looking in.  Check out more pics here.

Chevrolet Billboard Launches & Disappears in 30 Minutes

Posted byLaura DeMeulemeester

The 20' launch of a Chevy Aero billboard lasted only 30 minutes in London!

The unique installation – made entirely of 20,000 pennies – was unveiled in London’s New Oxford Street "to advertise the 769,500-pence starting price" of the new Chevrolet Aveo.   However, it only lasted 30 minutes as hundreds of passers-by seized the moment to pick up some coin.

“There has been some great car adverts before, but none that have stopped traffic and actually put money back into the motorist’s pocket so this is certainly a first,” said Les Turton of Chevrolet. “We’re glad we’ve topped up lots of people’s wallets, purses and, in some cases, rucksacks, but it would have been nice for the billboard to last a little longer than 30 minutes.”

Get "Lively"

Posted byLaura DeMeulemeester

I'll admit, I don't have time to manage my own world with friends around the globe, multiple email accounts and a non-stop job/life ... how does one manage a virtual world too?  (maybe I have the wrong attitude here!)

Google's new Lively is cool enough to make me want to try to find out!  Just launched yesterday, Lively comes to life.  Amongst other things, one can display YouTube videos on virtual TV's, display photos in virtual frames and play music uploaded from their computer.

Lively doesn't just rival Second Life, it knocks them flat.  Very cool!

Surface Computing

Posted byLaura DeMeulemeester

Microsoft's surface computer - a paradigm shift in computing and personal interaction?  The surface computer utilizes a series of infrared cameras to “see” what’s on the tabletop surface so it can recognize what’s on the surface and interact with it.

For instance, without wires or synching, you can immediately transfer a digital picture to the tabletop or to a cell phone.  Or order a beer.  The intent is commercial application first such as casino's, but could your your workplace wall become the next usable interface display?

Cool stuff - even if it has been around for about a year now.
